Cheap as Clay #8

An ongoing tasting of wines under the $10 mark, accessible in Vancouver, that we will post about regardless of whether we loved it or it was absolutely putrid. We will wade through bottles of bad plonk to find those hidden gems around town and hope that in doing this, you won’t have to do the same.

Sendas Del Rey ’07 Vino de la Tierra de Castilla

Finally! My first Cheap as Clay that didn’t crash and burn. I can’t find any spec sheets on this wine or even a website. It’s a blend of Grenache and Tempranillo and comes from the gigantic catch-all appellation of Vino de la Tierra Castilla right smack dab in the center of Spain.

My Tasting Notes:
Candied cherry and raspberry with an underlying green menthol/eucalyptus component on the nose. An intense palate of bright red fruit – plum, ripe strawberry and sour raspberry a little brambly and leafy on the finish. Decent finish, great rich and soft texture but not much tannin.

Definitely a modern, fruit driven wine (we’re not talking Yellow Tail numbers, but I’d be willing to bet there’s some residual sugar present) with a touch of rustic charm. Fantastic value at $9.99. Delicious every-day type of wine.

Here it is in the BCLDB
