When you starting talking about Bag-in-Box wine packaging, most Canadians wont conjure up memories and tasting notes of good quality wines. It’s unfortunate they have a negative reputation, but as I scoped out the boxed wine section at the 39th and Cambie Specialty store, there really aren’t any wines that deserve much of a reputation. This is why I was excited when I heard Pentâge was releasing a Pinot Gris in a box. For quick consumption wines needed in larger quantities (for say a dinner party) or for a “house wine” to draw a glass off each day, this is a great option. The wine is protected from oxidation as the specially developed bags shrink to fit the remaining wine, leaving no headspace. The shelf life is really only about 9 months from the time of “bottling,” so be conscientious when picking one up (however I don’t think that will be a concern with Pentâge as they look to be selling out just fine).

Pentâge 2008 Pinot Gris

Bright and aromatic on the nose, quite perfumed with tangerine and fresh ginger. Big acidity with a rich mouthfeel – apricot, sour orange citrus with a slight smokey finish. Good intensity and great fruitiness. I’m not usually a regular Pinot Gris drinker, but I’d happily enjoy a glass of this. Excellent refreshment factor. The price is $60 for 3L, which equates to 4 bottles. You end up saving $12 buying in this format as opposed to buying 4 bottles.

I’m excited that someone local has put some good wine in a B.I.B. and with stylish packaging to boot. Looking forward to more in the future?
