Plenty of Bargains at the BCLDB

I posted about the Gesellmann ‘03 Pinot Noir “Siglos” last week, and hoping for some more decent discounted bottle picks, I headed back to the Signature Liquor Store at 39th and Cambie (also note that the BCLDB doesn’t exactly have a reputation for “good deals” so best to capitalize). Scanning all the shelves, I did notice the odd few bucks off here and there and number of bottles discounted by 30%, however most of the deals were in the premium California and Burgundy area. Some Burgundies in the $150-$200 range with $50 marked off, and quite surprisingly in the $300 range with $100 off. Despite the attractive prices, I still didn’t have the $200 to shell out before doing a little research on the specific producers and vintages. It was also pretty interesting to see the Marcus James Chardonnay with $1 or so taken off bringing the price down to $7.49. Definitely not a thought provoking bottle, but at that price it makes for a very accessible beverage to have with dinner.

I did pick up a bottle of Pierre André’s Montagny 1er Cru Les Reforts ’05 which was kind of a strange pick but I was curious and the price was right ($19.99 instead of closer to $30 regularly). Montagny is a village devoted to growing Chardonnay in the Côte Chalonnaise, south of all the famous Côte d’Or villages in Bugundy. Until 1991, any white with at least 11.5% alcohol was regarded as “Premier Cru” so currently there are around 50 of them, which pretty much nullifies the designation. This wine unfortunately had seen too much air somewhere along the way and was oxidized, and not in the good intentional way. Perhaps the reason for the low price? Maybe just an off-bottle, but I’ll have to return it and try again.

Anyone else see a deal worth jumping on?

Nice one Janger. I have to stop by our local “Hellsgate” here over the next couple days so I’ll check it out. I’m stoked on the Domaine de la Saraziniere Macon as well… looks like a few left at 39th.

Domaine Alary – Cairanne blanc 2006 “Font d’Estevenas” $15.99 – Still available all over the place. If I can recall correctly, it was $25.99. So a pretty smokin’ deal. It is made from Clairette, and instead of showing pure, biting, green apple, it shows apple, pear, some weighty tropical fruit, great acidity, and a long mineral finish.
