Cheap As Clay #9

An ongoing tasting of wines under the $10 mark, accessible in Vancouver, that we will post about regardless of whether we loved it or it was absolutely putrid. We will wade through bottles of bad plonk to find those hidden gems around town and hope that in doing this, you won’t have to do the same.

Dunavar 2008 Pinot Gris, Hungary

Widely available at the BCLDB, this $9.99 bottle will never fail you.  My wife has been a proponent of its citrusy, orchard fruit-y goodness for years now, and it’s always consistent from vintage to vintage.  There were a few bottles of it at a get-together with a dozen of us at Jericho Beach yesterday and we found it to be a good match for our Doritos, Caesar salad, chocolate cupcakes and other junk food.  There were a few hungover people present (see that Ibuprofen in the shot?), who found its crisp, dry style approachable and its less-than-twelve-percent alcohol quite painless.

Dunavar Pinot Gris.  For when you’re broke, hung-over, at the beach, and have to get back up on that horse.

I appreciate how you manage to draw a line between “my wife”, “Doritos”, “hungover” and “least classy”. I really do.

I was recently attending a course out on Gabriola Island and, by chance, had the opportunity to try Dunavar Pinot Gris. I loved it! My question - is it available in Ontario? So far I’ve only found Dunavar Pinot Blanc, but, as as lovely as it is, I still prefer the Pinot Gris. It is light and refreshing, as you say, with everything or nothing at all!

Any hope of finding it in Ontario?

Thanks,
Jane

Hi Jane,

The Dunavar PG is great value… I just enjoyed a bottle the other night. Unfortunately, neither of us are very familiar with what’s available in Ontario. On the LCBO site it shows that a Muscat is in the market as well as the Pinot Blanc. That could be cool.
