A few completely unrelated paragraphs…

One great thing that happened yesterday was the reopening of San Francisco’s natural wine shop and bar, Terroir. What relief! Here’s a little glimpse at last night’s gorgeous by-the-glass offerings. The 06 Puffeney Trousseau was every bit as heavenly as last time I tasted it and the Guy Breton Vieille Vignes Morgon affirmed my belief that this is one of the best expressions of Beaujolais out there. It’s sure nice to have you back.

Today, Beppi Crosariol of the Globe and Mail, writes a very valid plea to the Canadian Government about scrapping this silly business that prohibits shipping wine across provincial boundaries. His article here. Despite that Beppi’s primary concern seems to be making his job easier, equal access to all the wine available in the country would make being a wine drinker in Canada much less painful. With this comes the beautiful freedom of actually ordering wine on the internet and the consumer benefits of competition. Meanwhile in Massachusetts, courts have decided that restricting people’s access to out of state wine is unconstitutional. Someone figure out what they did and just do that!
A few days back, Jancis Robinson posted this brief article about UK supermarket giant Tesco’s launch of the world’s lightest wine bottles. At 30% lighter, these agile little bottles cut down on carbon emissions associated with shipping them. Less ego bottles and more of these!
Finally, a shout out to Shea at Just Grapes and his great post The Wine Store as Community: A Forgotten Side of Wine Marketing. Completely agree.

Cheers, thanks for the positive mention. We really need a ‘terroir’ type bar in Vancouver. If only!

Shea,
I completely agree, I would be at a “terrior” style wine bar every night. The problem, as mentioned above, is that there is not enough “terrior” style wines available in the province. On the plus side everyone needs a good excuse to visit San Fran which is now a lot closer than when I used to live in Ottawa!

I think you’re right Jeff. Not quite enough labels for a deep list and especially at the price points that make them accessible. Although it is looking better these days, especially thanks to importers like your crew. Now if I can just convince you to bring in Puffeney, Occhipinti, Guy Breton, Noella Morantin, Nikolaihof, etc…. the list is long my friend.
