The Province‘s Wine Guy, our good pal, bestselling author and future Salt Tasting Room cameo server, James Nevison, does all of us a favour by putting an awesome Manzanilla Sherry up on a deserved pedestal in today’s newspaper…
This, coupled with the BCLDB’s recent releasing of the floodgates, making way more Lustau Sherries readily available in Vancouver, can be seen as a good jump-start toward making 2010 the best year yet for Sherry consumption in Vancouver.
Thanks, James!
I drink a bottle of Lustau dry Amontillado about every other month. It’s a nice bottle for less than $20. I wish we had a better selection but as we both know sherry is not on the top of most people’s shopping list. Cheers!
I just today purchased an Alvear Amontillado from the Montilla region in Spain – not technically a Sherry but that’s just a technicality. How can anyone get through the winter without a small supply of Sherry? Lustau is certainly the benchmark imported into Canada.
I am surprised that BCLDB went so heavy on the Lustau Solera Resrva offerings and I really hope that customers give them a try.
Sherry is totally one of the world’s best wine values, bar none!
I just don’t want to see these wines gathering dust on the shelf and then get marked down 30 to 40% in a few months – that does nothing to help the producer. I am glad when people in the local media champion these great wines.
I really hope we get more of the Almacenista offerings in from Lustau – these take sherry to another level (as well, check out the Apostoles Palo Cortado VORS from Gonzales-Byass (Tip Pepe people) – 30 year old Palo Cortado – WOW! – About $60 to $65 a bottle in private shops but once you open it, it is “bulletproof” – it will last for months after being opened because of the natural oxidation in the solera process).
I lived in Sevilla and we would go down to Jerez every other weekend to visit the bodegas – these are magical wines that deserve your attention.
When I get back in the city I’m grabbing a bottle of that Papirusa Manzanilla…. I haven’t tried that guy yet. I love that it’s a half bottle and I love that it’s only $15.
Travis, both the Alvear’s Amontillado and Fino are both great deals at $15 (not sure what they are in ONT but they’re probably close?). I almost always had a bottle of Amontillado going at home..perfect during the winter for sure.
I’m a touch surprised at the BCLDB as well, but maybe they’ve seen stats of Sherry consumption on the rise? Regardless, it’s a great opportunity for the consumer to buy these products in half bottles (many of which were specs before @ 24 bottles to a case!!). I hope other restaurants in the city (where applicable) will step up and offer one or two high quality sherries as by-the-glass pours and push it.
And of course, thanks for writing it up James!
Hey I’m glad they are bringing some in. I’ll be making a trip to Jerez in April, complete with a few articles on what I experience there. Let’s hope sherry keeps being “on the rise” in this market – it’s truly one of the world’s great value wines.
