Marcel Lapierre’s life-changing Morgon

Because I noticed I hadn’t talked about Beaujolais in far too long…

I’ve been hearing plenty of hype for the 2009 Beaujolais vintage and this makes me very happy. Jancis Robinson recently raved about it, while mentioning that the prices will see hardly any rise. I still haven’t tasted any of the ’09s from my favourite producers, but I briefly chatted with Neil from Boneta last night who says to believe the hype. What many people don’t understand is that you can buy some of the region’s top wine (from the top 10 classified crus) and from the most skilled growers and producers at less than $40 a bottle. Can you do that in Burgundy or Bordeaux? No, it’s tough to get drinkable entry-level wines at those price points.

I can’t wait to taste the ’09s from Marcel Lapierre, Clos de la Roilette, Jean Foillard, Jean-Paul Thevenet, Guy Breton, Jean-Paul Brun, etc, etc. Come to think of it, I might just stock up and drink strictly Cru Beaujolais for an entire year. This is also exciting as the Village level wines should be great too and less than $20.

If you’re still skeptical of drinking Beaujolais, swing by L’Abattoir and I’ll pour you a glass of Dominique Piron’s Moulin-A-Vent ‘Les Vignies du Vieux Bourg.’

wonder if the 09 Marcel Lapierre will be a good price too because of the EUR/CAD?

Unfortunately I’d say it’s unlikely we’ll see Lapierre’s prices drop until the province privatizes the LCB (fingers crossed). It’s a shame, because I would absolutely love to pour it by the glass and change vancouverite’s minds about Beaujo. In the US, it’s often the perfect price in the low $20s.

By the glass would be great. I will be stocking up on anything I can find from 09. Too bad we have to go down to Seattle and SF for a proper selection.

Good lord that’s a crazy tasting! 80 year-old Fleurie next to some 1844 Lafite. Thanks for that Weston.
